Last Minute Heroics Save Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, IN – A suddenly intensive game ended with a seven-yard scoring run by Irish QB Ian Book and 16th ranked Notre Dame survived a game Virginia Tech squad 21-20 on Saturday.

The Hokies held the Irish scoreless in the second half before Book and the offense put together an 18-play, 87-yard drive in the final minutes of regulation.  The touchdown run came with 29 seconds remaining and gave ND the lead for good.

Book completed his day 29-of-53 for 341 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.  He also added 50 yards on 13 carries.  Chase Claypool caught eight passes for 118 yards.  The most important reception was for 26 yards on the final drive to help set up the winning score.  Chris Finke finished with 56 yards on five receptions.

With the win, the Irish have won 16 straight home games, the third-longest streak in school history and improved to 2-1-0 vs. Virginia Tech.

ND forced three-and-outs on six of VT’s nine drives in the first half.

The Fighting Irish are now 6-2 on the year and now head to Durham, North Carolina to take on the Duke Blue Devils at Wallace Wade Stadium on November 9th at 7:30pm ET
