RailCats Rally For 2nd Straight vs Lincoln

LINCOLN, NEB. – The Gary SouthShore RailCats assured themselves a winning road trip and picked up their 50th win of the season Wednesday in comeback fashion as the RailCats scored four times in the final two innings to defeat the Lincoln Saltdogs by a score of 5-4. The RailCats now lead the four-game set 2-1 and have tied the season series 3-3.

Gary (50-38) got on the board in the top half of the first. Joey Havrilak began with a one-out single and advanced to second on a Cameron Newell base hit. After Kris Goodman struck out swinging, Colin Willis hit a two-out RBI single center field to score Havrilak and to give the RailCats the early 1-0 lead.

Lincoln (54-32) responded in the bottom of the second. Brandon Jacobs led off with a double and advanced to third on Juan Martinez’s base hit. After Tommy Mendonca was retired on strikes, Christian Ibarra plated Jacobs with a single to left to tie the game 1-1.

The Saltdogs took their first lead of the game in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Jacobs led off with a double for his third hit of the day and scored on Juan Martinez’s first home run of the season to give Lincoln the 3-1 advantage.

The RailCats began a rally in the top of the eighth. Andy DeJesus led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Alex Crosby then reached on a one-out walk. The runners advanced to second and third on a groundout from Havrilak before scoring on Martinez’s two-out, a two-run error off the bat of Newell to tie the game at 3-3.

The RailCats regained the lead when Willis led off the ninth inning with a solo home run to right field. The RailCats continued their offensive attack in the ninth as Frank Martinez and Cole Fabio both walked before Alex Crosby drove in Martinez with a two-out RBI single to center to give Gary its largest lead of the game at 5-3.

Joe Robbins cut into the RailCats margin with a two-out solo home run to make the score 5-4, but that was not enough as two batters later, Curt Smith lined out to Cole Fabio in right field to end the ballgame.

Sam Myers (1-0) picked up his first professional win by working two scoreless innings in relief as he allowed a hit and struck out two. Drasen Johnson (12) held onto the lead after allowing the Robbins home run to pick up the save. Lincoln’s closer Michael Wagner (3-2) suffered the loss by allowing a pair of earned runs on two hits while walking two and striking out two in the ninth inning.
