Marauders Edge Golden Rams in SIAC Contest

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Central State Marauders claimed their first SIAC victory with a 72-67 win over Albany State on Saturday.

With the win, the Marauders improve to 2-4 overall with a 1-0 mark in SIAC play. The Golden Rams remained winless with a 0-6 mark and 0-1 ledger in the conference.

In a game that had 15 lead changes and 8 ties, CSU forward Chris Scott scored 6 of CSU’s first eight points as the Marauders jumped out to a 8-2 lead at the 18:03 mark. Back-to-back three pointers from Davone Daniels and Jeremy Brown helped CSU build a 22-12 lead with 9:08 remaining in the first half. CSU maintained a 10-point margin until ASU closed the half on a 10-4 run capped off by a Rahdin Hughes dunk. CSU went into intermission looking to regroup with a 36-32 lead.

ASU tied the game, 42-42, at the 15:56 mark of the second half. The teams continued to trade baskets and remained tied going into the final 8 minutes of play. After a Napoleon Harris dunk put the Rams up, 55-53, Brown answered back with another make from beyond the arc to spark a 7-0 run for CSU. The Marauders maintained their lead for the duration of the game. While ASU managed to cut the deficit down to 3 on two occasions in the final 2 minutes, CSU converted on 7 of 8 free throw attempts to extinguish any chance of an ASU comeback.

En route to the victory, CSU managed to get to the line 28 times while converting 23 attempts. ASU managed just 4 trips to the free throw line, making all 4 shots. CSU turned the ball over just 6 times while forcing ASU into 19 giveaways.

Scott led all scorers with 25 points while grabbing 8 rebounds. Jeremy Brown recorded a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Davone Daniels was inserted into the starting lineup and delivered with 18 points and 4 assists.

Tylen Walker paced Albany State with 16 points and 7 rebounds.

CSU will try for their third straight victory when they host Fort Valley State on Monday at 7:30 pm.

A transfer from St. Joseph’s (IN), Davone Daniels is averaging 17.3 ppg in CSU’s home games this season.

Chris Scott leads CSU in scoring (15.4 ppg) and rebounding (6.8 rpg). He tied his season-high scoring mark with 25 points on Saturday.

CSU recorded a season-low six turnovers in Saturday’s win.

CSU remains without one of its top scorers in Dwight Richards, Jr. Richards, Jr. missed his third straight game due to injury.
