Late Fumble Thwarts Colts Comeback

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Andrew Luck, after nearly 20 months, nearly got the storybook ending he deserved against the Bengals in his return.

Unfortunately, a late fumble by Colts tight end Jack Doyle thwarted his efforts and the Cincinnati Bengals scored a 34-23 road win to open the season.

Adam Vinatieri kicked three field goals and Andrew Luck tossed touchdowns to Eric Ebron and T.Y. Hilton to stake the Colts to a 23-10 lead. But then Andy Dalson rallied the Bengals in the final 19 minutes of the game by hitting A.J. Green from 38 yards out to bring Cincinnati within 23-17, and directed a 4th quarter scoring drive in which Joe Mixon capped the drive with a one-yard plunge for a 24-23 lead. Clayton Fejedelem capped the scoring and sealed the win with an 83-yard fumble return from the aforementioned Colts tight end Jack Doyle.

Luck threw an interception on his first pass, but finished the game 39-of-52 for 319 yards and two touchdowns.
“I was very excited to play,” Said Luck. “Part of what I think I’ve been trying to do is sort of have that same feeling when you’re a 12-year old playing football. A young kid. Because it is a game. We do play the game. We don’t work. We play football. Certain things felt different.”
