Lafayette Jeff proves to be Giant Killers

In a game that had all the settings of a shootout did not prove to be disappointing Friday night at Schuemann Stadium as the Number 9 ranked team in Class 6A Lafayette Jeff Bronchos held on to beat Marion 37-31. The game got going fast and quick with Marquis Munoz getting the scoring started with a 6 yd run to give the Bronchos a 6-0 lead at the 8:14 mark of the opening quarter.

However, it didn’t take the Giants long to square things up when Quarterback Justin Johnson found pay dirt from a yard out with 3:29 left to go in the quarter. The touchdown was set up on the first play of the game for Marion as JK Thomas ran down the left sidelines for 49 yards setting up the touchdown for Johnson. Thomas later added another rushing touchdown from 5 yards out in the 4th Quarter.

When asked about his teams’ performance after the game Lafayette Jeff’s Head Coach Pat Shanley, was happy about the win but commented, “We didn’t have a good week of practice, but I feel that we did the things we needed to do to win the game.”

Shanley adds, “In order for us to be playing in late November, we have to play better football and that means executing at all stages of the game.”

After the Giants evened things up, the Bronchos marched right back down the field in 7 plays with Lattrell Brown putting Jeff back up 14-6 with 14 seconds left to go in the quarter.

Thinking that Marion was going to just run a play to close out things in the 1st Quarter, Thomas, decided to scamper 64 yards untouched to cut the score to 14-12 after 1 Quarter of play.

After the midway point of the 2nd Quarter, the Giants started committing miscues left and right, by committing penalties and also having an interception returned 67 yards from Avery Walker, on an ill-advised pass from Johnson. Munoz, took the ball on the first play and scored from 3 yards out to give Jeff the lead back for good at 21-18.

Back to the miscues, Marion ended the game with 20 penalties for 148 yards, something of which didn’t make Marion Coach Craig Chambers very happy. “Yes we were in the game but when you give up an interception that Johnson, should have taken the sack for that is a huge swing.”

As for the penalties, Chambers said, “That is one thing that we shouldn’t have especially when your 6 weeks into the season.”

There were a few bright spots for Marion considering how they had a chance to win at the end but Johnson was intercepted with 25 seconds left to go by Jeff’s Sedric Wright-Enlow to seal the win for the Bronchos.
