How One Quarter can change a game around

Lafayette, Indiana

One would think that if a team gets out to a 14-0 lead less than 7 minutes into a football game that it would have all the momentum for the whole game? Well, I’m sorry to say that couldn’t be further from the truth as Carmel ran off 35 unanswered points in defeating Lafayette Jeff Friday night at Schuemann Stadium 41-21.

The game got started as both teams punted on their opening possessions then the Bronchos got on the scoreboard at the 6:50 mark as Sophomore Quarterback Maximus Grimes hit Brian Jenkins on a 50 yard go route to make the score 7-0. On the ensuing for Jeff Grimes connected with Derrick Matthews down the left sideline to make the score 14-0 with 4:41 to go in the Quarter.

But my oh my how things can change in a hurry, Carmel finally woke up and went on a 9 play 64 yard drive with Zach White running it in from 3 yards out to make the score 14-7 with 35 seconds to go. After the game, Greyhound Head Coach John Hebert commented, “It was a rough start for us tonight and I have to take some of the blame but once we were able to make the necessary changes we needed to things went smoothly from there.”

With the lead cut to 7 and forcing the Bronchos to a 3 and out Carmel got the equalizer on a 35 yard pass from Gabe Quigley to Sam Rogers and that is when the wheels started to go away for Jeff. Right before Halftime White scored his 2nd Touchdown of the night from 11 yards out to make the score 21-14.

With no scoring in the 3rd Quarter, it was still a tight game going into the 4th Quarter. But 2 HUGE plays by Linebacker Joey Schmidt who was hurt for a portion of the Season picked off a Grimes pass and ran it back 30 yards to increase the lead to 21 at 35-14. This just happened 30 seconds after Alex Van Beyman made a sensational catch in the End Zone that made the score 28-14.

While Jeff, being deflated after that they were able to hit pay dirt when Jenkins caught his 2nd Touchdown pass of the night, this time from 31 yards out to cut the lead back down to 14 to 35-21 with just over a minute left to go. However, on the ensuing onside kick, it was as if they barely kicked the ball as it only traveled about 3 yards when Schmidt cashed in on his 2nd TD of the night as he scooped up the ball and returned it 43 yards to close out the scoring 41-21.

Hebert added, “This is a good team that we played tonight but we were able to make them one dimensional after we gave up the 2 quick touchdowns.” As for Lafayette Jeff Head Coach Pat Shanely, he commented, “Were at the door now, we just have to kick it in.” Shanely goes on to say, “I love this group of kids and being able to go 25-7 with this group that fought hard I would do anything for these kids as their an extension of my family.”

With the win, Carmel improves to 10-2 on the Season and will face Ft. Wayne Snider next Friday night in Carmel. As for Jeff, their season comes to a close at 9-2.
