Fighting Illini defeat Hilltoppers

(CHAMPAIGN, IL) – Julian Jones’ 10-yard interception return highlighted the scoring and the Illini defense as they defeated the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Saturday night 20-7 at Memorial Stadium.

Jones’ return came with 1:21 left in the second period allowing the Illini to take a 13-0 lead at the break.  Chayce Crouch ran one in from 9 yards out to extend the lead to 20-0 which would be more than enough for the Illini to move to 2-0 on the year.

The Illini defense came up big holding the WKU rushing offense to six total yards on the ground in 16 attempts.  Meanwhile the Illini ran for 193 yards in the win.

When asked about the improvement he saw from Week one to Week 2, Smith responded: “A lot. I’ve talked a lot about that we should see a lot of second-game improvement. Especially when you have a young ball club like we do. They’re being put in situations that are new to them each week. But, again they stepped up to the plate and they’re taking advantage of it.”
