Aztecs Hold Off Sun Devils

(TEMPE, AZ) – The San Diego State Aztecs and Arizona State Sun Devils squared off in an interconference matchup that saw the ‘Tecs defeat the Devils by a final of 30-20 on a hot Saturday night in Tempe.

Rashaad Penny got the Aztecs on the board first with a 95-yard TD run to put San Diego State in front at 7-0.  The Devils respond with a one-yard plunge from Kalen Ballage to even the game at the end of the first period.

San Diego State took the lead for good thanks to a 99-yard kickoff return from Rashaad Penny and two field goals of 29 and 27 yards from John Baron.  Arizona State scored on a five-yard pass from Manny Wilkins to Harry N’Keal to make the halftime score 20-14 Aztecs.

The Rashaad Penny show continued as he hauled in a 33-yard pass from Christian Chapman to make the score 27-14 as the third quarter came to a close.

San Diego State outgained the Sun Devils 352-342 including 279 yards on the ground.  Rashaad Penny was responsible for the bulk of the ground work with 216 yards on 18 carries.

The Aztecs play a Pac-12 opponent for the second straight week next Saturday night as they host the Stanford Cardinal at 7:30pm PT.
